Program Director, MassChallenge Rhode Island

MassChallenge Rhode Island (MCRI) seeks an entrepreneurial leader as Program Director to spearhead this dynamic program in its second year. You will lead the execution and delivery of the program and be responsible for KPIs across revenue generation, stakeholder development, program and marketing deliverables. You are a figurehead for MCRI and will work actively to facilitate active collaboration between corporations, government, academia, investors and other key stakeholders in the community with a shared interest to support entrepreneurship. 

You are responsible for achieving all agreed upon business and strategic goals to ensure MCRI is a sustainable, self-financing, and successful entity in the MassChallenge portfolio. 

Our ideal candidate is deeply embedded in the Rhode Island startup community and can use their experience, networks and passion to further develop and grow MCRI. The candidate will utilize his or her demonstrated leadership and entrepreneurial experience in a mission-driven organization. The ideal candidate has strong operations capabilities and is execution oriented.  

Reporting to the Managing Director, Boston you are located full time in the Providence area. This role requires some time in Boston during the official program, and as required for planning and other leadership activities.  

What You’ll Do: 

  • Strategy Development:  Create, set and deliver on a strategy to enable the Rhode Island program to be successful, adjusting as required to meet regional customs and challenges but without changing the fundamental guiding principles. Understand and utilize resources available through the MassChallenge Boston program.  
  • Fundraising: Accountable for the fundraising required for MCRI, under the guidance and support of the Boston Managing Director and Vice President of Corporate Development. Your primary KPI is account retention and growth, in addition to a defined KPI for lead generation.  
  • Program Operations & Delivery: Design and execute the full year calendar, from applications, judging, accelerator program to the Awards Ceremony. Integrate RI program design with the Boston program to leverage resources and enhance outcomes for both markets. 
  • Stakeholder Management: Accountable for the successful management of key partners, advisors, and board members to ensure their value to the Rhode Island program. Ensure startups are satisfied with the program. 
  • Community Development: Establish relationships with all constituencies, including public, private, academia and nonprofit stakeholders. 
  • Infrastructure Management: Oversee and manage office space and infrastructure taking lead on search, negotiations and overall management of space. 
  • Build and Manage Team: Determine the team that will be required to deliver on the MassChallenge program, including developing the budget required and the funding sources to cover this budget. You will make one hire in 2019 to support overall operations. 
  • Uphold MassChallenge Guiding Principles: Maintain MassChallenge’s guiding principles in support of startups and our organization overall.  

Who You Are: 

  • You have 7+ years of leadership experience in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment. 
  • You have a bachelor’s degree; advanced degree typical and preferred. 
  • You are in the center of the entrepreneurial universe. You have been heavily involved in startups community in some form, as a founder, mentor, investor or general supporter.  
  • You understand Rhode Island - the culture, the opportunities, the challenges, and the key stakeholders across sectors. 
  • You have an ability to connect and engage with all stakeholders at varying levels. Able to influence people intelligently, understand people’s agendas and how MassChallenge can appropriately respond to those agendas. 
  • You can leverage existing relationships in the Rhode Island business community and have a demonstrated ability cultivate partner relationships and generate leads. 
  • You are extremely organized with a high attention to detail and very strong ability to prioritize and manage time. You are execution oriented. You are not just a planner but also a doer.  
  • You are skilled with budget planning – MassChallenge is a non-profit, so you must be able to manage budget for our activities effectively. 
  • You have excellent interpersonal, written, speaking and customer relationship-building skills, across multiple levels of management. 
  • You take a highly collaborative approach and able to work across teams and functions to achieve success. You have an ability to lead, a willingness to be led, and comfort with situational leadership. 
  • You are skilled in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel required. Knowledge of Salesforce is preferred.
